Engineering a clean, uninterrupted timber aesthetic.

The Brief

Motus Consult was tasked with providing full structural and enclosure engineering services for a new timber shop and adjoining suite. The primary goal was to maintain the visual purity of the heavy timber construction without the distraction of conventional steel brackets.

The Solution

We leveraged the innovative Timberlinx system to replace visible connections. From initial design to final detailing, we ensured every connector was hidden, allowing the natural beauty of the wood to take center stage while meeting rigorous load requirements.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The Nest is a 10-story multi-story residential and commercial building located in Yellowknife, NWT's downtown core. Motus Consult Ltd. provided both structural and preliminary enclosure engineering services for this project.

The building was unique in that it was previously a government building, until it was vacated in 2012 and unused for years. In 2022, Borealis Development purchased the building with a view to restoring it, and converting it into a residential and commercial space, a move welcomed by the community where housing is needed.

The Nest will provide eight residential units on each level from the second to the tenth floor, including an equal split between one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments, complemented by communal laundry, storage cages in the basement, a fitness area, and bicycle storage. Two retail spaces are also planned for the ground floor.

Motus Consult worked closely with the developer and architect to realize their vision for the building.
