Position Overview
Motus Consult is seeking a Structural Engineering Technologist to join our Calgary office. This is an excellent opportunity for a technologist working toward certification to apply technical expertise in structural engineering design, analysis, and construction support. You will work alongside professional engineers on diverse projects, preparing detailed drawings, performing structural calculations, conducting field inspections, and providing construction administration support while exercising independent judgment in complex technical areas.
Key Responsibilities
1. Technical Design and Drafting
- Create, manage, and maintain BIM models in line with project specifications
- Prepare detailed structural drawings, construction details, and specifications using AutoCAD and Revit.
- Develop structural models and coordinate with architectural and other engineering disciplines.
- Prepare and check structural calculations for building components including beams, columns, connections, foundations, and lateral systems under the guidance of professional engineers.
- Assist with structural analysis using industry-standard software (e.g., SAP2000, S-Frame) for load calculations, stability assessments, and code compliance checks.
- Apply knowledge of timber, steel, concrete, and masonry structural systems to technical design work.
- Prepare shop drawing reviews and technical sketches for contractor coordination.
2. Field Work and Construction Administration
- Conduct site inspections and field reviews to verify structural construction compliance with design intent and specifications.
- Document site conditions through written notes, photographs, field sketches, and measurements.
- Perform structural assessments of existing buildings including condition surveys, load evaluations, and deterioration investigations.
- Prepare field inspection reports and observations for review by professional engineers.
- Review and respond to contractor requests for information (RFIs) and submittals related to structural components.
- Monitor construction quality and identify deficiencies or deviations from design specifications.
- Support resolution of structural issues that arise during construction and coordinate with contractors and engineers.
- Work safely on active construction sites, including at heights using ladders, swing stages, and mechanical lifts.
3. Professional Development and Standards
- Apply industry-recognized codes, standards, procedures, and practices to solve technical problems within structural engineering.
- Develop and maintain technical knowledge in structural design, building codes, and construction practices.
- Work toward or maintain C.E.T. (Certified Engineering Technologist) registration with ASET.
- Participate in professional development opportunities, training sessions, and industry events.
- Collaborate with professional engineers and contribute to quality management practices.
- Exercise independent judgment while working under limited direct supervision on routine to moderately complex technical tasks.
Qualifications
- Diploma in Civil or Structural Engineering Technology from a TAC-accredited program or equivalent.
- Registered as a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) with ASET, or eligible for registration (Technologist in Training - T.T.).
- Minimum 2–5 years of relevant experience in structural engineering design and construction support.
- Strong technical knowledge of structural engineering principles, load paths, and structural behavior.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD for structural drafting; experience with Revit is required.
- Familiarity with structural analysis software (SAP2000, S-Frame) is an asset.
- Knowledge of Canadian National Building Code (NBC) and provincial building codes
- Experience with timber, steel, concrete, and masonry structural systems.
- Ability to prepare structural calculations and technical documentation.
- Experience conducting field inspections and construction administration.
- Strong technical writing and communication skills.
