1. Structural Design and Analysis

  • Perform advanced structural analysis including load calculations, stability assessments, and seismic design using industry-standard software (e.g., SAP2000, S-Frame, Revit, Rhino/Grasshopper).
  • Design structural components and systems for building projects ranging from single-family residential to multi-storey commercial and institutional buildings.
  • Assess and design structural systems for existing buildings including renovations, upgrades, and seismic retrofits.
  • Ensure all designs comply with the National Building Code of Canada (NBC), BC Building Code (BCBC), and relevant CSA standards (S16, A23.3, O86).
  • Prepare structural calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical reports.

2. Project Management and Coordination

  • Lead structural engineering on projects from feasibility and concept design through tender preparation and construction phases.
  • Coordinate with architects, building enclosure engineers, mechanical/electrical consultants, and contractors to integrate structural solutions.
  • Manage project timelines, budgets, and deliverables to ensure quality and on-time completion.
  • Participate in proposal development, scope definition, and fee estimation.
  • Interface with clients to understand project requirements, provide technical guidance, and ensure project satisfaction.
  • Identify and address potential structural challenges and risks throughout the project lifecycle.

3. Construction Support and Field Review

  • Conduct site visits and field reviews to verify structural integrity and ensure construction complies with design intent and specifications.
  • Review shop drawings, submittals, and contractor requests for information (RFIs).
  • Prepare field inspection reports and provide technical support to contractors during construction.
  • Address and resolve structural issues that arise during construction and post-construction phases.
  • Monitor construction quality and provide guidance on material selection and installation methods.

4. Team Development and Professional Practice

  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers, EITs, and technical staff.
  • Review calculations, drawings, and reports prepared by junior team members to ensure technical accuracy and quality standards.
  • Support the professional development of team members through knowledge sharing and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Maintain compliance with EGBC quality management guidelines and professional practice standards.
  • Stay current with building code updates, industry advancements, and new structural materials and technologies.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (Master's degree is an asset).
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation, and Structural Engineering (Struct.Eng.) designation registered with EGBC, or eligibility to transfer registration to EGBC.
  • 5–10+ years of Canadian experience in structural engineering with demonstrated leadership in building design and project management.
  • Strong background in the design of buildings using timber, steel, concrete, and masonry structural systems.
  • Experience with both new construction and existing building assessment/renovation projects.
  • Proficiency in structural analysis and design software (e.g., SAP2000, S-Frame, Revit, Rhino/Grasshopper).
  • In-depth knowledge of structural engineering principles and Canadian building codes (NBC, BCBC).
  • Experience with seismic design in high seismic regions (BC experience preferred).
  • Competency in AutoCAD and/or Revit for structural drawings and coordination.
  • Understanding of project management principles including scheduling, budgeting, and resource allocation.
