This is an excellent opportunity for a recent engineering graduate or EIT with 1–3 years of experience to develop expertise in structural engineering design, analysis, and construction support. You will work alongside experienced engineers on diverse projects, gaining hands-on experience in structural design for new buildings, existing building assessments, field reviews, and construction administration while building a strong foundation in structural engineering principles.
Key Responsibilities
1. Structural Design and Analysis
- Assist senior engineers with structural analysis including load calculations, stability assessments, and code compliance checks using industry-standard software (e.g., SAP2000, S-Frame, Revit).
- Support the design of structural components and systems for building projects ranging from single-family residential to multi-storey commercial and institutional buildings.
- Participate in the assessment and design of structural systems for existing buildings including renovations, upgrades, and structural repairs.
- Prepare structural calculations, drawings, and technical documentation under the supervision of senior engineers.
- Ensure designs comply with the BC Building Code (BCBC), National Building Code of Canada (NBC), and relevant CSA standards (S16, A23.3, O86).
- Learn and apply structural engineering principles for timber, steel, concrete, and masonry structural systems.
2. Construction Support and Field Review
- Conduct site visits and field inspections to observe construction progress and verify compliance with structural design intent.
- Document site conditions through written notes, photographs, and field sketches.
- Assist with reviewing shop drawings, submittals, and contractor requests for information (RFIs).
- Support senior engineers in addressing and resolving structural issues that arise during construction.
- Prepare field inspection reports and observations.
- Monitor construction quality and gain understanding of material installation methods and construction sequencing.
- Work safely on active construction sites, including at heights using ladders and mechanical lifts as required.
3. Technical Documentation and Project Coordination
- Prepare structural drawings using AutoCAD and/or Revit, coordinating with architectural and other engineering disciplines.
- Develop technical specifications for structural components and systems.
- Prepare engineering documents, structural assessment reports, technical memoranda, and feasibility studies under the supervision of senior engineers.
- Assist with project coordination activities including attending project meetings and communicating with clients, architects, and contractors.
- Support project documentation including tracking RFIs, change orders, and construction-phase correspondence.
- Maintain organized project files and documentation in accordance with professional practice standards.
4. Professional Development and Learning
- Develop technical knowledge in structural engineering design for various building types and structural systems.
- Gain understanding of seismic design principles and lateral load resisting systems.
- Learn building code requirements and standard of care for structural engineering practice in Ontario.
- Work toward gaining engineering experience that meets PEO requirements for P.Eng. registration.
- Participate in professional development opportunities, training sessions, and industry events.
- Receive mentorship and technical guidance from senior engineers to advance your engineering skills.

- Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an accredited university.
- Registered as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or eligible for registration.
- 2–5 years of relevant experience in structural engineering for building design.
- Basic understanding of structural engineering principles, load paths, and structural behavior.
- Familiarity with structural systems including timber, steel, concrete, and masonry (training will be provided).
- Proficiency in AutoCAD for drafting; experience with Revit and structural analysis software (SAP2000, S-Frame) is an asset.
- Understanding of relevant building codes is essential.
- Technical writing skills for preparing reports and documentation.
