Position Overview

Motus Consult is seeking a Junior Building Enclosure Engineer to join our Calgary office. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent engineering graduate or EIT with 1–3 years of experience to develop expertise in building envelope design, assessment, and restoration. You will work alongside experienced engineers on diverse projects, gaining hands-on experience in field investigations, performance testing, design, and construction administration while building a strong foundation in building science principles.

Key Responsibilities

1. Building Envelope Assessments and Field Work

  • Assist senior engineers with building envelope condition assessments for existing buildings, including commercial, residential, institutional, and industrial facilities.
  • Conduct on-site inspections to identify building envelope deficiencies, moisture issues, and deterioration.
  • Perform field performance testing including water penetration testing, air leakage testing, infrared thermography, and moisture surveys.
  • Document site conditions through written notes, photographs, and field sketches.
  • Measure building dimensions and quantify conditions on-site and from drawings.
  • Participate in construction site reviews to monitor compliance with design specifications and identify deficiencies.
  • Work safely on active construction sites, including at heights using ladders, swing stages, and mechanical lifts.

2. Design and Technical Documentation

  • Assist with the design of building envelope systems for new construction and renovation projects, including roofing, wall cladding, windows, doors, and waterproofing systems.
  • Collaborate with architects, structural engineers, and other design consultants on building enclosure details that align with industry best practices.
  • Prepare technical drawings and details using AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Develop building envelope solutions that meet energy efficiency standards, building codes, and sustainability targets (including BC Step Code, LEED, Passive House standards where applicable).
  • Support heat transfer modeling and thermal performance analysis using software such as THERM and WUFI.
  • Contribute to the preparation of technical specifications for building envelope components and systems.

3. Construction Administration and Project Support

  • Review shop drawings, submittals, and contractor requests for information (RFIs) related to building envelope systems.
  • Prepare change orders and track project documentation.
  • Attend construction meetings and coordinate with contractors to ensure proper installation of building envelope systems.
  • Monitor construction activities to verify compliance with design intent and building envelope best practices.
  • Assist with the preparation of punch lists and deficiency reports.

4. Reporting and Communication

  • Prepare engineering documents, condition assessment reports, technical memoranda, and feasibility studies under the supervision of senior engineers.
  • Interpret and hand-draw in-situ construction details as needed.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations clearly in written and verbal formats.
  • Interface with clients and contractors as needed, under the guidance of senior team members.
  • Participate in internal and external project meetings.

5. Professional Development and Learning

  • Develop technical knowledge in building envelope technologies including roofing systems (flat, sloped, green roofs), wall systems (masonry, EIFS, metal panel, curtain wall), waterproofing, and air barrier systems.
  • Gain understanding of building science principles including heat, air, and moisture transfer through building assemblies.
  • Learn and apply National Building Code of Canada (NBC), Alberta Building Code (ABC), and relevant standards (CSA A440, ASTM, etc.).
  • Work toward gaining engineering experience that meets APEGA requirements for P.Eng. registration.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities, training sessions, and industry events.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Mechanical, Architectural, or related engineering discipline from an accredited university.
  • Registered as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) with APEGA or eligible for registration.
  • 2–5 years of relevant experience in building envelope or building science
  • Basic understanding of building science principles, heat and moisture transfer, and building envelope performance.
  • Familiarity with building envelope systems such as roofing, wall cladding, windows, and waterproofing (training will be provided).
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD for drafting; experience with Revit is an asset.
  • Understanding of National Building Code and Alberta Building Code requirements is essential.
  • Technical writing skills for preparing reports and documentation.
